Eleven cruise-line passengers were being transported to Miami for treatment Tuesday following a bloody bus crash Monday afternoon in the tiny Caribbean nation of Dominica.
Sixteen tourists on the Celebrity Summit were returning from a culinary-themed shore excursion about 4 p.m. when their bus lost control and drove into a ditch near the capital of Rouseau.
Celebrity spokesman Michael Sheehan said three passengers were seriously injured and will be among 11 tourists the company is flying to Miami for further treatment at the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
The others were treated at Princess Margaret Hospital in Roseau with broken bones, bumps, bruises and lacerations.
Five passengers were treated and released from the hospital in Dominica. Sheehan said all 16 injured tourists are American citizens, none of them from Florida.
Five staff members from the ship, including a nurse, stayed with the 11 guests that remained at the hospital overnight, Sheehan said.
Specially trained members of the company's Guest Care Team and an additional nurse arrived in Roseau Tuesday morning to escort the injured guests and their traveling companions during flights to South Florida.
Jackson Memorial Hospital was alerted Tuesday morning to prepare for a large, but unspecified number, of injured passengers, said hospital spokeswoman Lorraine Nelson.
''Our thoughts and prayers are with our injured guests and their families,'' Dan Hanrahan, president and chief executive officer of Celebrity Cruises, said in a statement.
``We'll continue to do our very best to assist them in the aftermath of this unfortunate accident.''
The guests had participated in a ''Caribbean Cooking Adventure'' in which they learned to prepare and present traditional island dishes.
The company said the more than three-hour excursion concludes with a scenic drive through Roseau before returning to the pier.
Celebrity Summit is currently sailing a seven-night Caribbean cruise that departed from San Juan, Puerto Rico, last Saturday.
Port calls include Philipsburg, St. Maarten; Roseau, Dominica; St. George's, Granada; Scarborough, Tobago; and Bridgetown, Barbados.
