Is there anything to do in the city of Nassau, besides the straw market? I only made it to the straw market and Senor frogs last time, and I really would like to experience some Nassau culture. I'm thinking museums, old buildings, churches etc.

One of my most unforgettable experience in Nassau was our historic city tour. We visited buildings and famous homes. If you will visit Nassau, don't forget to stop at   Fort Charlotte, Fort Fincastle, Water Tower and Queen's Staircase. You'll really enjoy these places.

Yes, the straw market and senor frogs are the first things that comes to mind when you think Nassau. One of the times we were there, we walked around in the city and did a little shopping. We also went up the Queens staircase to the fort on the top (which Crystal mentioned). There are a few souvenir shops up there and a nice view. Nothing really special.

When we were there, there was a guy at the bottom of the stair case, who started telling us about the history of the stairs and the city. He was probably talking for about 15 minutes and it turned out to be very interesting. We gave him a $5 tip and he was happy.

Are there areas one should avoid in Nassau?

I ask because there can be  a huge discrepancy between what tourists are allowed to see, and what life is really like once you get away from tourist areas.  Exploring could be risky!

You can take the Nassau City Tour by itself, or in conjunction with the Botanical Gardens. There's also the Swim with the Dolphins tours at Atlantis, which is pricey, about $119 per person.
