I am a not so very healthy person...

One of my main troubles are heavy attacks of migraine from which I suffer since I am 7 years old (I am now 58 years old). So I might say I learned to live with it, and furthermore, medication has developed since I was a child, so life is still pretty bearable, although I sometimes have 12 attackes per month...

This info is just relevant for my topic, not to have you sigh or anything...;-)

So here we were on our first cruise, and unfortunately, I had a few heavy attacks, on and off, like one day I was fine, next day I wasn't. We (my husband and I) were already considering the possibility that cruising maybe wasn't the best thing for me...

But now comes the funny part: our steward - very nice person, very nice indeed - was very worried about me being ill in the cabin while my husband went out on pre-booked excursions (sitting next to me holding my hand doesn't help). Which we thought was very nice... Until we found out that he - the steward - was scared to death that I caught something (anything) that might get the whole ship ill...

Of course we read the ship's warning that if you have problems with your digestion you have to visit the doctor on board, but migraine is something I can handle myself - I should handle myself after so many years...

So very much against my liking I had to inform this steward that there was "nothing wrong" with me... indigestion wise.

I hate this kind of monitoring. I mean, of course, I understand they don't like the whole ship to be contaminated by a virus or a bacteria, but what about my privacy? I do have my own rights, and yes, I do have responsabilities concerning the rest of the passengers...

Next time, should I hang a sign on my door: ILL, but NOT contaminating.... or something???

I was really sort of apalled... and the steward may have meant it well regarding me, but we both think he was more concerned about the consequences (which I can relate to, from his point of view) Oh Hell, how should I deal with that without handing out my whole life story on a plate???

Do understand your situation.  You are correct stating the cruise staff are trained to be aware of any passenger that might be showing signs of sickness.  I have a friend who on the second day went to the nurse on board and they confirmed she had the flu.  She was confined to her stateroom for 3 days.  On the fourth day she had to get out and went up on deck.  She got a visit from the Captain telling her she must not leave her room until the ship returned to home port.  It was a 7 day cruise.

Cruise ships are paranoid of an out break of sickness.  Rightfully so, as it can put a ship in dock for days for health officials to inspect the ship and release the ship if they deem it safe.

A word to the wise. . . don't tip anyone off to the fact you maybe ill. . .if at all possible.  Happy cruising. . .TP

Right, don't tip anyone off... TexasPepper!

BUT the steward is around all the time, and this one in particular seemed to be very keen on checking who went in and out his or her cabin...   and I don't want to tiptoe around.

I felt a bit like a schoolgirl, but without a note from my mother ;-)
