One of the things I like about travelling is getting to know the "cuisine" of strange and new (to me) countries. Much as the cruise company I cruised with tried to comply with the local habits, for me there is only one way to sample the local food: eating on shore!

Now I know the cruising company does not like their guests to dine off the ship; not everybody's stomach is made for exotic restaurants, and passengers that are ill from the strange food or the maybe-not-so-hygienic circumstances in which the food was prepared are not an asset to the trip... But yet I feel I have to sample just some of the food in the ports of call! Actually I NEED to, or else I have not travelled abroad...

Any of you feeling the same, or do you all stick to the ship's menu for lunch or dinner? Are some of you adventurous when it comes to cooking and dining, or are you afraid to throw up after a gorgeous meal (I only threw up a week ago after a very nice meal in a very 'stable' country called France...)?

Com'mon... share your experiences! In- or outside the bathroom...!!

Oh yes, this is one of the main highlights we look forward to enjoying.  Dinning in ports of call.  Cozumel. . .at Costa Brava, Montego Bay, Jamaica we lunch at Margaritaville. . .Grand Cayman. . .we have a little place we like to go to in the early afternoon.

What I do is ask my room steward, waiters, staff I get to know these questions.
1.  Where do you go to eat at the ports of call?
2.  Where do you go to check internet email in ports?
3.  Where do you go to have fun in the ports?

Must say, it was Barcelona, Spain that won us over to port dinning.  Never had a bad experience in Barcelona.

Go for it!  Reach out to the locals.

Aaaahhh...Barcelona! Home of the world famous tapas! Those tasty little snacks and bites you can order at any decent bar or "tapas restaurant". A bit of this, let's try a bit of that... Yammie yammie!! Savour the food of north Spain that conquered the rest of the country and the Spanish islands as well. But don't go into a tourist tapas bar... you get the ordinary Spanish food in mini portions, instead of the specific tapas food...

Indeed, dining on shore is a great experience. I heard some people say they always eat on board as they have paid for it already. That is one way to look at it. So you have to check your watch all the time to get back on board in time for lunch or dinner that is nice and tasty as well, but not the adventure it can be.

Other people want to go "the safe way" and only eat a burger in the harbor. Now I don't know about you, but there are burgers and burgers and a burger is not always a good idea, if you know what I mean. Or, to put it more bluntly: you can get very sick of a burger while the local food goes down nicely without any problems afterwards...

You must explain the internet thing to me, TP, 'cause there is internet on board of the Celebrity ships, so I take it on other ships as well...? Why checking it on shore? Because it is a bit cheaper? I'd say, looking for that internet café and checking your mail etc. takes time you can spend more nicely being free as a bird!!

We too like to eat on shore.  Had the most interesting Indian spiced Buffalo wings in St. Kitt's earlier this year.  Sampling the local food is a great way to experience the local culture.  We look for the "local" places and avoid chain restaurants.

Internet connections on board are EXTREMELY slow (satellite) as well as being costly.  Internet cafes near the port are cheap and much much faster (hardwired).  I use the PC and have a snack at the same time.

Dining is an exhilarating experience on Chicago's North Shore! With hundreds of restaurants throughout the area, you'll never have to worry about finding.
