Are most flights bought as part of your cruise package, or does it make sense to buy the flights as a separate purchase?

Are the flights even available as part of the cruise package, ever?

If you book through a travel agent, he can probably put it all together in a package deal for you. I prefer to book directly with the cruise line though, and search for the cheapest flight through places like travelocity, cheaptickets and priceline.

It makes more sense to avoid "bundling" your vacation's segments together.

I think you actually save money by piecing together the best deals you can find.

My travel agent recommended book it separately to find the best deals.

I suppose if you don't want the hassle, it is MUCH easier to have an agent do it all -- but that costs money.. MONEY that I could use for shopping at the ports of call!

there are 2 ways to go with this obviously.  i think it's cheaper if you do the booking yourself, however, i was on a cruise where we got back 6 hours late.  ALL international fliers missed their flights.  if they were booked through royal caribbean the cruise line made the reconnecting flights.  those that were not booked through RCL had to spend inordinate amounts of time on the computers and phones trying to rebook.  i did here one couple say it just cost them an extra 2300 because their first flight was nonrefundable.

Obviously it depnds on where you are cruising.  When I sailed the Mediterranean out of Barcelona, I planned to go 2 days early, but ended up with a half day in Amsterdam airport, missed connection, and I planned 2 more days at the end, but got too tired and flew out the day after.  With cruises out of the US, I almost always fly in a day early, relax before getting on the ship.

When I first cruised, I always had the agent book with the cruiseline, but now with the internet I save the money like regandy for spending.  I book the flights myself, knowing that I am responsible and take the chance.  But nowadays I more likely to buy travel insurance too
