How did I book?:
Carnival direct
Did I get a good price?:
yes
How was my trip to the port?:
Drove from Missouri to Louisiana.
Left Missouri at 11:00PM 6/5/09 only stopped for gas and breakfast. Arrived Port of New Orleans at 7:00AM 6/6/09 thank heaven for TOM-TOM.
Embarkation/Debarkation:
EMBARKATION: Was better than I thought it would be but could certainly be improved. They gave people zone cards after they were already seated which didn't help because when they announced zone 2 everyone pretty much filtered toward the loading area. not sure why they didn't give the zone cards as you were checking in, then have people sit in the terminal according to zone card. They could of then dismissed them in zones for boarding utilizing a few terminal employees rather than just an announcement. Announce Zone 2 is free to board. When people from zone 3 stood up(employees would know what zone you was in according to where you was seated in the terminal) employee could remind them that it is for zone 2 only at this time. Nice polite way for an employee to tell people to sit down, shut up and wait your turn.
DEBARKATION: Regardless of the 90 announcements leading up to the debarkation there were still numerous people flocking to the Empress deck which created a delay. I really don't think there is a whole lot that can be done to improve this as people can't follow clear direction. Improvement I would like to see is crew mambers staged at elevators and stairways requiring people to show their sail and sign cards to verify they were indeed part of the deck that was curerntly called to disembark. Once we made it to the gangway it was pretty smooth sailing. They had a few terminal employees staged along the way to direct everyone on what was expected at customs and what items you needed to have readily available.
The ship:
We loved it. Sitting at the table in front of the offset just outside the lido deck for breakfast was awesome. Sitting on the deck in the front of the ship with my wife under a star filled sky was breath-taking. Dinner every night was fabulous. The crew was outstanding.
Cabin:
Wasn't sure if family would get sea-sick so we opted for an inside room on the Riveria deck. It was not a whole lot different than a slightly smaller version of a nice hotel room. Mostly utilized as a sleeping quarters this cruise. Next cruise we have a balcony room reserved and can't wait.
Dining:
Loved the food and wait staff in the Celebrations dining room. Items I would never try (have to pay for in a resturant) we tried and those that we didn't care for (wife and daughter doesn't care for seafood) staff offered and brought them something else.
Lido food was typical buffet food, if you left from here hungry it was your own fault. Alot of selection I especially liked the Oriental Grill, kids enjoyed the burgers n dogs, wife would get a plate of watermelon and we'd eat it on the rear deck each night over conversation or looking at distant lights wondering if it was a ship or land and if so which island or city.
Entertainment:
Entertainment was good I'm just not a song and dance man. Comedians were funny though I thought their afternoon shows were as funny if not funnier than there adult midnight shows. Not a prude just don't believe using a curse word in the same joke makes it funnier but was worth staying up for.
Ports & Excursions:
KEY WEST: Children parasailed that was awesome. Was almost half price booking it at Key West as opposed to doing it onboard. Had a lot of cool shops, got some really good deals on T-shirts, once we shopped around. Took a taxi to the beach, rented rafts and snorkel gear, had a great time. We would move there in an instant if we had the financial wherewithall to get away with it.
NASSAU: wife didn't care for much. I thought it was pretty much a tropical New Orleans. Took taxi to the beach and did a little shore snorkeling. Bought liquor was very cheap. Bacardi store was really cool. Did a little shopping, ok mostly browsing, shopping not so much.
FREEPORT: Took taxi to straw mall, good deals on necklaces and bags. Bought trinkets for the land lovers back home. Walked across to the beach and ducked into the Isle of Capri casino long enough to play a dollar just in case there was a ripe slot that was waiting to pay for our entire cruise. No such luck!
Overall Experience:
We never thougt we would top going to the Southern 500 at Darlington SC, I am a huge Dale Earnhardt Sr. fan. We witnessed Jeff Gordon win the Winston million that day. That vacation pales in comparison to our cruise.
I get so tired of people bashing Carnival. They need to read all the disclaimer information before they are allowed to post. We were given a 7 day Carribean cruise for the same price as the 5 day we booked for Mexico due to the Swine flu.
Love cruising have booked for 2010 and looking at options for 2011
