Sovereign of the Seas Bahamas Coco Cay
This was a last minute decision for a Bahamas cruise Christmas 2007
How did I book?:
We booked through a local travel agency after seeing their ad in a local newspaper.
Did I get a good price?:
I think $250 was a pretty good deal, considering that it was during the school's Christmas break. I checked on RCCL's website and their price was higher.
How was my trip to the port?:
Perfect... We live about an hour from Port Canaveral so there was no hotel or flight involved.
Embarkation/Debarkation:
It was ok. We arrived at Port Canaveral around 11:15 am and were on board 45 minutes later. While most passengers were debarking, we took our time. We went up and enjoyed our breakfast and waited as long as possible before we left.
The ship:
Sovereign of the Seas is one of the older Royal Caribbean Cruise Line ships and I believe it retired late 2008. Our cruise director told us it would be moved to Spain and sail for another company under Royal Caribbean Cruise Line.
I did not get the “wow effect” like I had when I first got on board on Carnival's Fantasy or Inspiration ships. The flashiness was a little bit scaled down compared to Carnival's Fantasy class ships. Don’t get me wrong, I definitely liked Sovereign of the Seas. What it lacked in look, it had in lounge areas. There were so many nice places to hang out and even though the ship was full it never seemed crowded anywhere. Cabin:
The cabin was ok. It was very small and I’m pretty sure the cabins in Carnival's Fantasy ships are at least 50% larger. It was clean and functional though. There was plenty of closet space and after unpacking the suitcases could be stored under the bed.
In our group we had one cabin with a queen bed and another cabin with three beds (one of them was a pull down bed). The bathrooms were also small, but that was expected. Our two rooms were connected with a door between them.
Dining:
We always got our dinner in the main dining room. The food was really good, but we all agreed that it was a little better when we were with Carnival. When we were cruising with Carnival, we were also able to request items not listed on the menu, but on Sovereign of the Seas, when one from my group asked for a piece of cheesecake, he was told he could only get what was on the menu. It’s no big deal really, but it's just one of the small differences we noticed.
Breakfast and lunch in the Windjammer buffet were fantastic!
Entertainment:
Absolutely! We watched the main shows, the magic show and the comedian. They were all really good.
Ports & Excursions:
Nassau: This is definitely not my favorite port. It was VERY crowded in the port area when we arrived. When we finally got out we headed straight for the straw market and I killed some time while my wife was shopping for "designer" purses. After that we spent 2-3 hours walking around sightseeing and shopping in downtown Nassau.
Coco Cay: The cruise lines private islands are my favorite ports of call. They are 100% relaxation and fun. Coco Cay wasn't an exception from that. We did a little shopping in the small souvenir shops and headed for the buffet. It was really nice. After that we spent the rest of our time hanging out on the beach and enjoying the water.
Overall Experience:
The cruise was really nice and I enjoyed every minute of it (except for the muster drill).
3 days is too short though. You're just getting the hang of it all and it's time to go home.
